We have traditional entrance gates, such as our Dorset gates, which are a staple at John Brights. Dorset gates can be a stylish entrance that makes your house or farm in and around the Dorset countryside stand out.

We are a family-owned company and we have been committed to delivering the best quality hand-made gates since the beginning of John Bright Fencing, in the 1980s. It all started with John Brights building gates and fences for friends, family and neighbours. The quality and the attention to detail what was made John’s products stand out, as well as helping out the local community around Bridport, such as in Shipton Gorge.

This has been a core part of John Bright’s ever since, making us trusted around Dorset, including Bridport, Shipton Gorge, Dorchester and more.We have recently delivered an entrance gate project for one of our customers in Shipton Gorge, replacing the old gates and fitting in our new ones.

If you are interested in getting a new entrance gate fitted and you live in Shipton Gorge, you will find our case studies below very helpful, and you can contact us for further details!

Mr HW asked us to replace their old entrance gates at their property in Shipton Gorge on the outskirts of Bridport. We levelled the ground and replaced the existing Dorset gates with Iroko hardwood Dorset gates hung on rounded oak posts, furnished with galvanised fittings for the perfect finish. A side gate was included for easy pedestrian access.

Iroko hardwood can be treated with teak oil, if you would like to. However, many people prefer to leave Iroko to weather without treatment for a more natural look.

The benefits of Iroko Hardwood for entrance gates

Durability

Iroko is an extremely durable hardwood – known for its resistance to insect damage and decay. An attractive Iroko entrance gate will last for many years to come – making it not only an attractive welcome to your home, but a financially viable investment, too!

Our master carpenters produce premium gates and only use the highest quality Iroko Hardwood. We are proud to produce all of our wooden gates and fences in our workshop in Salway Ash, Bridport. Whether you are situated just up the road from us in Shipton Gorge (like our customer here), across Dorset or even further afield across Somerset an Devon – we will produce an entrance gate for you that is durable – giving you peace of mind that it will withstand weathering and insect damage.

Stability

Our customer in Shipton Gorge can rest assured that their entrance gate will remain stable. Iroko is a great choice of wood for entrance gates because it has fantastic dimensional stability and won’t warp or change shape over time. In some cases, lower quality woods can go mishhapen due to changes in temperature and become structurally compromised – meaning you will need to repair or replace your entrance gate.

Natural beauty

Iroko has a beautiful golden to medium brown colour and unique grain patterns, giving it a naturally beautiful appearance. Although you an absolutely choose to, there really is no need to stain your wood and recolour it – and with the durability and stability of Iroko – you don’t need to treat it that often either! It contains oils and resins that will protect itself and make it resistant to absorbing moisture. We recommend cleaning your Iroko entrance gate and applying a protective finish periodically, but you’ll find that upkeep is much easier than with other woods!
