Bowl of new potatoes garnished with rosemary

Dig deep

Remember the anticipation as the first bowl of steaming new potatoes was ceremoniously placed on the table, filling the air with a minty aroma that hailed the arrival of summer. Then the joy as they melted in your mouth with a burst of flavour, sweet and full of sunshine.

We’re starting to enjoy the first harvest of Jersey Royals and Pentland Javelin among the many varieties now available.

Make thyme

Growing your own food is possible in even the smallest plot or on a windowsill. Herbs like thyme and salad leaves can thrive in cups or bowls and picked early, their small size packs extra flavour.

Salad days

Outside, make room for some veg amongst the flowers and shrubs or plant a separate plot where you can reap the rewards at the table all year round. Just two square metres can keep you in salads throughout the summer. A planter can also give produce in abundance.

The potting shed

There’s no better place to get away from it all than in the potting shed. Whether it’s sowing, transplanting or just watching the world go by with a nice cuppa, a shed is your best friend throughout the seasons.
