How a shed led to a whole new career

When Hilary Hansford, 23, walked into John Bright’s country store to buy a shed, she never dreamed she would leave with a new job. “I got chatting to Beth Bright and realised we knew the same people through Young Farmers,” Hilary says. “We got on really well and by the end of the conversation Beth had offered me a job. It was a complete shock. I was really surprised and went home to seriously think about what had just happened.”

A few days later, Hilary was back at John Bright’s to meet the team for a more conventional interview. “Everyone was so friendly and professional. It was an easy yes.”

Farming background

From a farming background, Hilary studied agriculture at Kingston Maurward College then worked rearing calves and young stock. She later switched to life in a firm of farm accountants but missed being outdoors. “Walking into Bright’s that day was perfect timing.” She’s now becoming expert on the many varieties of wood and wire on the fencing side of John Bright’s business as well as the numerous products in the country store, everything from arbours to animal feed.

As a member of Dorset’s Hermitage & Hillfield Young Farmers, Hilary is good behind the wheel of a tractor and helps organise shows and events around the county. In her spare time, Hilary relaxes by cooking a roast dinner and hill walking with her cocker spaniel.

And yes, she did buy that shed!

Hilary will be working in the country store so you’re sure to see her around.
